Common Causes of Car Accidents

Cars are an integral part of every society, as they serve as the optimal means of transportation. This form of transportation, while it brings convenience and ease to moving from place to place, it can also serve as a source of pain and discomfort when involved in a car crash.

According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), it was estimated that about 94% of car accidents in the United States occur as a result of human error. But just because you are careful does not mean you may not be involved in one.

Over speeding

Late to a meeting or need to get somewhere as soon as possible, a lot of people are tempted to over speed, thereby breaking the speed limit. It has been noted that lots of car accidents occur as a result of overspeeding as faster vehicles are prone to accidents and it can even increase the severity of the crash.

Distracted Driving

A lot of us are tempted to use our phones or do other mundane tasks during driving. This keeps the driver distracted from the road and can lead to a severe crash with incoming vehicles.

Drunk Driving

Drinking reduces concentration, impairs vision due to dizziness, and decreases reaction time. When paired with driving, it is a recipe for disaster. So never drive under the influence of alcohol to protect yourselves and other road users.

Reckless Driving

Speeding over the limit, changing lanes rapidly and aggressiveness on the road is other causes of car accidents. So don’t be impatient, drive carefully and obey all traffic rules.

Running Red Lights

This is a common occurrence at road intersections, as drivers do it in order to save time when hurrying for an important meeting or if they think there are no other cars around but jumping the red light not only puts you in danger but you jeopardize the lives of other road users as well.

Bad Weather

Bad weather such as rain and snow can also increase the occurrence of road accidents as they impair visibility, making it more difficult to navigate the roads. During bad weather, you can either wait for it to clear up or be extra careful on the road.

Design Defects

This is caused by a fault in the car itself and not as a result of human error. While this can’t always be avoided, it is advised to check your car properly before use and engage in regular maintenance.

Animal Crossing

Animals do not know the rules of the roadway as we do, so they can cross the road unexpectedly and in turn cause a terrible car crash. So make sure to take caution when you see an animal crossing sign and use your high beams when traveling in rural, woody areas.

Street Racing

This is the leading cause of some of the deadliest car accidents. As the cars are going incredibly fast, it makes them difficult to control and the resulting car crash is unlikely to yield survivors.
